Thursday afternoon Jeff, Dmitry and I tried out a new tow road just west of Verona. It’s a little bit shorter than the rest but we did manage to find a few workable thermals.
Then it was off to Buzzy to meet with the trike crew and Nick. The wind wasn’t quite as predicted so the wheel launch team decided to hold off for more favorable conditions. However, Nick was able to get a couple of nice flights in at the small airfield. Great day guys!

They did it!! After a little kiting to warm up their flying muscles the boys played a round of Rock, Paper, Scissors to see who would go first. Todd crushed Steve’s scissors with his rock so he was up. He strapped on the Miniplane, hooked up his wing and was ready to go. Moments later he was running down the runway being lifted into the sky. Three laps around the airfield and he brought it back safely to the runway. Next up was Steve. He too found himself running down the runway and into the sky after a few missed attempts. He looked like a natural once he was airborne. He also set the machine down safely in the middle of the runway after a few laps. Congratulations guys, you are now officially pilots!!
Cole was at the airport too and made several long flights. His forward launches were flawless and his landings were spot on. It won’t be long before he is out exploring on his own. Great flying Cole!! Early Sunday morning I met Rick at the hanger and we unboxed his new Ozone Mojo and set up his trike to work with it. Then it was off to the Elver Park sledding hill to get Steve and Todd their first flights. They did great and were soon making short flights from the top of the hill. Next up for them is motorized flights. The it was time to rush to Sauk City to meet Dmitri, David, Mark and Greg for an afternoon of towing. So much fun!!
Dmitry and I spent Saturday traveling around south western Wisconsin exploring potential tow sites. We checked out five different roads and made nine tows before calling it a day. Lots of potential!
Todd and Steve made great progress Wednesday. Both are now ready for a trip to the sledding hill where they can take their first flights with their new wings. Hopefully the weather will go as forecast and we can get them airborne this weekend. Good luck guys!
Steve and Todd received their new Macpara Chargers today. We wasted no time getting them out of the bags and into the breeze. Although we didn’t kite long because the gusts were building rapidly. Within an hour the skies opened up and dumped a bunch of rain so we retreated to the hanger for some simulator training. Later, Brian drove up to study for his PPG1 test. The rain was relentless and drowned out the videos sound track. Fortunately I know all the words by heart and could repeat them loudly for Brian. Good luck with the test Brian!
Todd and Steve are progressing rapidly through training. Both have already ordered wings and are getting much better at kiting. Next up for yhem is the sledding hill and some time in the simulator.
Matt A and Brian were at the airfield Thursday for some flying. Brian made 6 flights that night. Way to go guys!! Todd and Steve spent the day in ground school. We even watched Risk and Reward staring William Shatner! Rick stopped in and made some refinements to his trike. Wednesday evening was for flying. Madcity Paragliding graduate, Dave brought his trike out for a nice long flight. Nick made his 2nd and 3rd flights and Scott made his 25th and final supervised flight. It was also Scott’s first flight with his new Moster 185+ Miniplane. He actually let me fly it first. That machine is awesome!! Scott just needs to pass the PPG2 written test and he will have completed training.
So much has happened since leaving my “real job” last week. Some highlights- Scott got his new Moster 185+ Miniplane, Rick’s Trikebuggy arrived and we paired it with his Walker Jet, Logan finally made it to the hanger and tried the simulator, Dmitry is really adding up his tow time, several others are joining us for midday towing, Todd and Steve began training and Matt A graduated!
This is awesome!! |
